Aquamarine is March’s Birthstone… Deriving its name from the Latin “aqua” (water) and “mare” (sea), aquamarine is the official birthstone for the month of March. Those with March birthdays will delight in a wide range of aquamarine shades, from the palest pastel blue to greenish-blue to a vivid deep blue. Jewelry lovers and gemstone cutters alike have been inspired by this member of the beryl family.
One such cutter is the legendary Bernd Munsteiner, who in 1992 was commissioned to take the “Dom Pedro,” a 57-pound, 23-inch-tall rough aquamarine, and transform it into his masterwork called “Waves of the Sea.” Known to jewelry aficionados as “the Picasso of gems,” Munsteiner is famous for his “fantasy cuts,” where he often would cut and facet only the back of the gem, making the design appear to be embedded in the gemstone.
The “Dom Pedro,” which was mined in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil and appropriately named after the two emperors of Brazil, is considered to be the largest aquamarine ever cut. The obelisk-shaped “Waves of the Sea” is 13 13/16 inches tall.
